Encuentro de las Américas de Turismo Social Chile

From May 31 to June 4, the Social Tourism meeting of ISTO Americas was held in Chile. This event, organised by ISTO Americas, in partnership with the Secretariat of Tourism and the National Tourist Service of Chile, had two very specific objectives. On the one hand, to present the good practices of social, solidarity and sustainable tourism of the American ISTO members and, on the other hand, to bring together the members, mobilizing them to exchange and share, so that through partnerships and innovation, social tourism in the region can better develop.

All this was first realized by a Seminar entitled "Social Tourism: Engine of Sustainable Development of the Industry" held in the city of Santiago on 31 May and 1 June with more than 200 participants. This Seminar was developed around 4 thematic axes:

¿ Effectiveness of public policies related to social tourism
¿ Entrepreneurial view and analysis of experiences in social programs
¿ Assessment of the pillars of sustainability in local communities participating in social tourism
¿ Indicators and development of social tourism products

The members of ISTO Americas then held their General Assembly with a presentation of the actions carried out in 2016, the presentation of the financial statements, the election of the Administrators and a discussion on future activities, the next ISTO World Congress in France in 2018. Costa Rica's Minister of Tourism, Mauricio Ventura, represented by his collaborators Leyla Solano and Rafael Soto, presented his official candidature for Costa Rica to be the Host of the 2019 edition of the Social Tourism Meeting ISTO Americas. This initiative was warmly welcomed.

Following this meeting, the members traveled to the Araucania region in Pucon from 2 to 4 June in order to exchange more concretely with social tourism stakeholders in the region and to do field visits to two of the most successful social tourism programs in Chile (for seniors and young people). This mobilization also made it possible to organise a half day of exchange among the members in order to develop social tourism in the Americas in a more effective, innovative, solidarity and sustainable way.

The Social Tourism Meeting ISTO Americas counted the presence of almost 25 representatives of ISTO members from 9 countries of the Americas (Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay) Chilean members, including Grupo Novojet and the hosts of the Meeting, the Undersecretary of Tourism and SERNATUR.
